The starfish is an interesting creature. In fact, a starfish is not really a fish at all. Its name is a little deceiving. A starfish is actually a echinoderm. It gets it name from its appearance. This little creature has five arms that make it look like a star. It is a well known sea creature and is one of the most recognized species in the sea.

The Body of a Starfish
A starfish usually has five arms, which give it a star like appearance. However, some species of starfish have as many as 50 arms. The body is made up of calcium carbonate and is rough in texture. The starfish is usually a pink or red color. The body of a starfish may look rather simple, but it is more complex than one would think.

The starfish has an eye that can only see light or dark. In other words, the starfish has pretty bad vision. Its mouth is on the underside of the body and is similar to a human’s mouth with a similar digestive system. The mouth goes to an esophagus, which goes down to a stomach. However, a starfish can actually eat from the outside of its body without ever having to take food into its mouth. This is quite an interesting feature of this sea creature.

Starfish has a rather complex nervous system and is what controls the starfish’s movements and actions.

Starfish Species
There are starfish located all over the world in different oceans. It is thought that there are around 1,800 species in the world. They can live anywhere from reefs to the sea floor and are only found in salt water.

Small, But Important
The starfish is a beautiful and interesting creature. You may wonder how a starfish relates to the business world. There is an interesting story floating around about a little boy who found starfish on the beach and takes his time to toss them back into the water. His dad asks him why he bothered when there were hundreds of them washed up on the shore and he could never throw them all back in.
